THE KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

The concerts give people a good chance to enjoy classical music and the beauty of nature in the same place. They have been very popular since the beginning and due to limited accommodation in the vicinity of Kirkjubaejarklaustur guests are advised to book accommodation in advance. The festival is organized by The Skaftárhreppur Cultural Committee  and the artistic director is the Icelandic mezzo-soprano Guðrún Jóhanna Ólafsdóttir.

The history of the Kirkjubaejarklaustur Chamber Music Festival

The Kirkjubaejarklaustur Chamber Music Festival was founded by pianist Edda Erlendsdóttir. The first festival took place on 16 to 18 August 1991 and it has been running yearly ever since. More than a hundred international musicians have performed in the festival. Edda Erlendsdóttir was the artistic director of the festival from the beginning until the year 2006, when mezzo-soprano Gudrún Jóhanna Ólafsdóttir took over. Many of the concerts have been recorded by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. A list of musicians who have performed in the festival can be seen here below.
